 ***Added functionalities 

   1.   Image-based sorting.  This function is specific for in vivo animal studies.  It is enabled when a 
listmode scan is loaded in 2D viewing mode. To invoke the function: Actions->Image-based Sorting 
On a Listmode scan. Clicking on the "? " button for a basic introduction to this function.   
   2.   Multi-VOI function. This function is developed for studies with multiple objects in one scan. For 
example:  to scan a few well-positioned seeds/bones in one scan, reconstruct it, then draw a VOI 
around each seed/bone, then save them in individual  datasets.  If the samples can be always placed 
in the exactly same way, automation is possible.  It should be applied to reconstructed images, not to 
projection images. It is enabled when the dataset is considered as a complete 3D reconstructed 
cross-section image. To invoke the function: Actions->Draw/Save Multiple Volume Of Interest(VOI). 
   3.  3D-distance function: revised. The reference points can now be saved and loaded back; when 
adding a point, it is appended to the end of the list instead of inserting as the first; etc. 
   4.  Actions->Rename/copy/shift Dataset:  this is just a handy tool. The intention is to replace one of 
our old program Tconv. 
   5.  VOI can be saved and loaded now.  This functionality is implemented slightly differently in 
various viewing modes.   For a single VOI in 3D viewing mode, a pop-up window will show up if one 
right-clicks on the VOI, offering options to modify, save or load a VOI. In case rotation has been 
applied, this will be saved together with the VOI definition.  For the multi-VOI function mentioned 
above, save/load VOI's are done via the multi-VOI window itself.  For 3D registration,  VOI's can be 
saved either with right-mouse click on the VOI, or via the load/keep buttons on the window (choices 
on what and where to save can be configured in the options window for 3D registration). 
   6.  3D rotation step by step.  Previous versions only offered continuous rotation with CTRL + mouse 
move. The new step by step rotation  allows finer control over rotation. To enable this, concept of 
"current active view" is introduced:  when the mouse goes over a particular view, that view becomes 
the active view, and is highlighted by a thicker colored frame around it.  A combination key, CTRL 
left/right-arrow, will rotate the image on the active view by one rotation step. Another key, CTRL 
SHIFT left/right-arrow, will rotate by 10x rotation steps.  In case of normal 3D viewing, the rotation 
step can be defined via Options->Preferences at viewing.  In case of 3D registration, this rotation step 
is defined by the options for registration. 
  7.  Command line facility. Use DataViewer.exe /? on a command window to see available options. 
  8.  Numerical display range. Right-mouse clicking on the color window will pop up a window, 
allowing to enter the low/high limits.  This is implemented for the main navigation window (normal 
2D view, 3D view),  and for 2D/3D registration.   
  9.  Width of fields in the status bar is now configurable. Options->Preferences Layout. 
  10. More options for the cross-hair: hollow crosses at different levels. Options-> Preferences At 
Viewing. 

 **Minor modifications and bug fixes

   1.   3D-registration:  by showing blended image with contrast color, the image is reversed to better 
match the saved difference image.   
   2.   3D-registration: a few bugs related to saving, different image size, pixelsize, corrupted 
difference image when both inputs are TIFF, etc... 
   3.   3D-registration: left-mouse click inside VOI does move the cursor now (previous versions: 
double-click was needed inside VOI). 
   4.   Data integrity check can be switched on/off from the preferences  (for loading).  
   5.   Introduce "system folder". It can be configured in Options->Preferences At Loading; the default 
is the folder where DataViewer is located. This folder is used to keep a few ini files concerning 
different settings. E.g., DV_Annotation.ini for annotation; DV_defaultMultiVOI.vlf for multi-VOI 
function; DV_Imagebased_bkup.ini for image-based sorting.  
   6.   About window:  the program dir is now displayed.  
   7.   Options->preferences For Annotation. A few bugs and inconsistency related to color 
configuration are fixed.  
   8.   Automatic hand-mode: can be switched on/off in Options->Preferences At Viewing.  Also a bug 
fix: during the hands-on mode, the cursor would remain in hand-mode, blocking all other 
functionalities. 
   9.   Two bugs related to double-clicking to reset color range have been fixed.   
   10. 2D viewing: when scrolling, the display range was not taken into account when rotation is 
applied.  
   11. Smoothing option Gaussian 3x3, 5x5:  by mistake,  they were actually boxcar filters with 
equivalent sizes.     
 

DataViewer 1.5.2.5 (Release), October, 2015 

***Added functionalities and minor modifications 
    1.  Post-scan files (iif) are now recognized in 2D view, 3D view,  and 2D registration. Handy for 
image comparison. 
    2.  Save screen display was not made available for 2D view when saving the full series. Added. 
When saving a series of images: it started from where it is. Now it starts from the beginning.

    1. 2D registration. When zoom is reset, the rotation is modified instead of zooming

***Added functionalities and minor modifications 
    1.   Image scale and image annotation. The image scale is permanently displayed on the status bar 
at bottom-right corner of the window, if applicable. Annotation function includes an annotation pane 
which fills the empty space in 3D viewing, and optional annotation on the image itself (in both 2D 
viewing and 3D viewing). To invoke, go to menu Options->Preferences annotation. 
    2.   Link function. This function links two or more  copies of DataViewer for image comparison. It is 
limited to 3D viewing only, and it requires the images in the linked copies to have exactly the same 
dimensions.  To compare images with different dimensions, it is recommended to use the 3D 
registration function, which will resample images if necessary. To invoke the new link function, go to 
menu Actions->Enable link function. 
    3.   Alternative 3D view layout.  By default, the coronal (X-Z) view is displayed at top.  An 
alternative layout is provided: in this layout, the coronal (X-Z) view is shown at bottom. To switch, go 
to menu Options->Preferences at viewing. 
    4.   Save VOI: upon request, this function is revisited. Numerical editing of VOI is provided.  A bug in 
drawing VOI (mis-aligned VOI's at different views) is fixed.  Extra margin is added to avoid cutting 
objects due to rotation. 
    5.   Recent-file list is available, via Options->Open recent ...
    6.   2D color table display. This is only used by image fusion in 3D registration.  Also a special fusion 
method[1] is introduced for phase images.  
    7.   2D registration. Various modifications: allow modifying pixel size, as in 3D registration; allow 
zooming, manually or automatically;  allow RGB image: read in as RGB if required (Preferences), and 
registration uses mean value of the red/green/blue channels. 
    8.   Save screen display: it is now also available for the registration functions; minor bug fixes in 
naming convention; annotation pane included. 
    9.   Hand mode.  Becomes automatically available when one drags on the image. 
    10. ROI: side handle is added. 
    11. 3D Navigation window: zooming with mouse wheel.  Increased resolution. 

**Bug fixes
    1. Color table was not correctly saved in the BMP images.
    2. Saving VOI: it would crash if input is non-standard format  (e.g., DICOM). 
    3. Create SPR image: was not foreseen for non-standard file format (e.g. DICOM); was incorrect in 
Z-range. 
    4. 3D registration: a bug in true-3D registration method ( registration failure if the shifts are large). 
    5. On some PC's, DataViewer would crash after the welcome window is shown.  
    6. Gamma-function color look-up-table: there were a few inconsistencies, especially for 16-bit TIF 
images, and during switch between 2D viewing and 3D viewing, also during switch between disk-
based and memory-based 3D viewing. 
    7. Data dynamic range and Gamma-function when saving data: the dynamic range and Gamma-
function was  not taken into account properly when saving data. A revision is done on all saving 
functions. A FAQ entry is provided in the help file for clarity on this issue. 
    8. In the 3D navigation window: in some cases, picking up a plane by left-mouse click would select 
a wrong plane.

***Bug fixes
    1. Crash/Not responding:  during animation of certain format of images. 
    2. For datasets with sequence step other than 1:  by animation or scrolling through images, the 
step size is not consistent (going faster by going down). 
    3. Multi-bin dataset:  when switching from one bin to anther (T-axis), the file name  in the title bar 
was not updated;  when saving a VOI as dataset, failure if the number of sequence digit is other than 
4;  when saving a VOI for current bin, always the first bin was taken instead. 
    4. Recover support for Windows XP, which was unintentionally disabled in previous release. (Yet to 
be evaluated.)

 

DataViewer 1.5.1.2 (Release),  May 27  2014 

 ***Added functionality in registration modules 
    1.  In function "3D registration":  true 3D registration mode is introduced. Switch it on/off in 
"Options". This method is slower than the pseudo-3D method. 
    2.  In function "3D registration": two new buttons "Auto range" and "Reset range" next to the 
histogram. By loading, an automatic dynamic range adjustment is always applied for registration 
purpose. The 2 new buttons make it easier to reset or get back to the auto range. 
    3.  In function "3D registration":  renewed saving function.  The target/reference/difference 
volumes can now be saved at original image resolution; VOI can be defined for saving; etc.. Saving at 
original resolution can be very memory-demanding and time consuming depending on the image 
volume. 
    4.  In function "2D registration" and "3D registration": rotate/shift images with mouse clicks, in 
addition to the button controls for rotation/shift. To rotate, hold CTRL key and rotate with left-
mouse-button, same as the rotation function in the normal viewing mode. To shift, hold both CTRL 
and SHIFT keys, and shift with left-mouse-button. 
    5.  In function "2D registration" and "3D registration": for VOI, the option "Show ROI" is removed.  
In "Draw VOI" mode, to navigate within the VOI (change cross-hair position), use double-click instead 
of single-click with left-mouse-button. 

 ***Added functionality in general
    1.  Actions->Save->Select a VOI to save ...:  VOI drawing is now interactive. When this function is 
called, VOI is switched on automatically. The VOI can be also switched on via "View->Show volume of 
interest", or CTRL + Shift + v.  
    2.  Text output for profile and 3D distance measurement: the text extension and format is changed 
from crv to csv, which is directly readable by EXCEL. 
    3.  A new color table named "Black body" is introduced.  
    4.  Introduce Dicom format. 
    5.  Option to convert color image to gray image is added. This option can be set in "Options-
>Preferences at loading".  It can also be temporarily altered  when one uses the "open" button to 
load a file. For the 2d/3D registration, color image is always applied: use the default method as 
defined in the preferences if available; otherwise convert with "luminance". 
    6. RGB image: if loaded as color image, it is now possible to change the contrast for viewing. 
    7. An integrity check is added whenever the dataset is about to be loaded for 3D viewing.  Only 
image dimension and bit-depth is checked for.
    8.  Images with different dimension or bit-depth can now be viewed in 2D. A warning is given when 
this is detected. 
    9.  Options->Preferences at viewing:  option to show colored frames surrounding the 3 orthogonal 
views; option to show labels of the 3 views. 
    10.Mouse wheel: zoom image in and out.  When moving mouse on scroll bars and images: focus is 
automatically gained (this behaves similarly as in CTan, if the option "Forward mouse wheel to 
controls" is turned on in preferences.).  
    11.Revised support for multiple monitors/displays:  by start up, the main window is forced to be 
inside one of the monitors completely;  secondary windows are forced to be displayed in the same 
monitor where the main window resides. Caution: a monitor which is turned off manually is not 
detected, i.e., the main window may be running on the monitor which is not turned on! 
    12. Histogram windows (Data range, 2D registration, 3D registration): double-click(left) on the 
window switches between log-scale and linear scale; double-click(left) on the highlighted line (range 
indicator) resets that range limit. 
    13. VOI in all viewing modes: editable with right-mouse click on the VOI itself.

automatically when 3D rotation is invoked.

    1. Real-time rotation in the image plane for viewing (for grey-value image only):  hold the Ctrl key 
down and use left mouse button to rotate; right mouse button to cancel. To reset rotation, hold on 
Ctrl key and double click with left-mouse button on the image.  This function is only coupled to 2D 
view and the transaxial view in 3D view.
    2. Extended 3D-distance measurement: up to 16 reference points can be remembered and easy 
switch to any of the reference points. However, to avoid complexity, 3D-distance measurement is 
disabled in case of rotation in VOI mode.
    3. Saving data:  saving transaxial or 2D images with modifications such as rotation, data range, 
and/or smoothing is now enabled.

    1. When loading an invalid file, warning will be given, mostly with a "good" reason. .

    1. Fit-on-screen: it was disabled when the image size is smaller than the display size.   It is now 
enabled. However, when loading a new image or a new dataset, small images are shown as "true 
size", while large images are shown as "fit-on-screen".

    1.  Animation will be cancelled now as soon as the user clicks on some controls which could be

DataViewer 1.2,  June 2005

   DataViewer has undergone a major revision: to a large extent  it has been rewritten. 

   Two viewing modes have been introduced: 2D view and 3D view.  In 2D view, DataViewer behaves 
like TView: image is not loaded to an internal disk file and the viewing can be started instantly, and 
the image does not need to be resized  even if it is very large.  In 3D view, DataViewer behaves  like 
the previous version: the whole dataset (resized or not) has to be loaded into a memory-mapped disk 
file to enable coronal/sagittal views.  The 2 modes can be switched freely from one to another, with 
the necessity to load data at the first time when you switch from 2D to 3D.  You may customize 
DataViewer's behaviour using various options in the preferences. 

   In 3D viewing, a new way of showing data is introduced: the so-called 3D navigation window, which 
shows the transaxial, coronal and sagittal views in their true/relative positions. This window can be 
only enabled when all three views are available. Use right-mouse button to rotate, left-mouse button 
to drag-and-move the planes. 

   In both 2D/3D viewing, you may choose to show the reference projection image. Click/drag the red 
line to navigate. 

   DataViewer recognizes now if a given dataset is a projection dataset, a cross-section dataset or 
simply a stack of color images. By default, the projection dataset and color images can be only 
viewed in 2D, without loading.  For those who insists viewing projection dataset in 3D,  there is an 
option foreseen to switch it on.  

   DataViewer reads now the configuration files (*.log, *_cfg.txt, *_par.txt, etc.) associated to each 
dataset to retrieve and show information about the dataset.  Therefore it is possible to view the pixel 
information  in grey value (default, and as before), in Hounsfield unit if it is available, or in 
attenuation coefficient if it is available (or more precisely, as it is reconstructed.).   All three units are 
linearly related to each other, so you will not notice any difference in the image itself, but the pixel 
information and the profile will use the unit of your choice. 

   Profiling function is modified slightly:  the profiling window  is not stationary any more. It will 
appear whenever you use the right-mouse button to draw a line, and disappear when  you click 
anywhere in the image.  An option is given to view the profile in global scale or local scale (as in 
version 1.1).  You may save the profile either in ASCII format or a BMP file. 

  Resizing in 3D view has been improved slightly. In the previous versions, the same resizing factor 
was applied to all 3 dimensions regardless of the pixel sizes. This version will enforce isotropic voxel 
automatically.  This is particularly useful when you have a dataset reconstructed with step size 2: 
when you choose to resize it by 4, the z direction will only be resized by 2 (which is more logical).

  Saving a new dataset: a log file will be created with necessary information.  In addition, resampling 
(linear interpolation) will occur automatically to ensure (2D) isotropic pixel  in the resulting dataset. 

  Many details in viewing has been re-considered:  added function to choose data range in case of 16-
bit input, the z index represents the file sequence; image control window is "detached" from the 
image views and  can be toggled on/off to enlarge the display area,  option to have the animation bi-
directional, etc...
